If you're looking for a way to inject some sustainability into your laundry routine, ditching the laundry liquid and switching to soapberries may be the way to go!

This pack of soapberries by That Red House contains:

  • 90+ washloads worth of Organic Soapberries
  • One cotton wash bag

What are soapberries?

Soapberries are the fruit of the Sapindus Mukorossi tree. The fruit is picked, the seed removed and the shell dried. This dried shell is full of a substance called 'Saponins' which are a natural soap. Saponins reduce the surface tension of water, releasing dirt and grime from fabrics and surfaces. The tree grows in the Himalayan region of the world and the berries are used for many different cleaning applications. They are naturally antibacterial, anti fungal and hypoallergenic.

'That Red House' soapberries are certified organic by USDA. They are hypoallergenic, chemical free, and vegan.

This pack of soapberries will provide you with over 90 loads of super economical, zero waste and chemical free washing.

How do I use them?:

Pop 5 berries in the cotton wash bag provided and double tie the top (soapberries are scent free, so if you like fragrance, you can add 4-5 drops of 100% pure essential oils to the bag). Then simply throw the bag inside the drum of your washing machine with your clothes.

They work fine in cold water but warm water draws more soap out of the berries, so turn up the temperature on your machine if you have a particularly dirty load.

Once the cycle has finished, be sure to remove the wet bag of berries from the machine. Do not leave the bag in direct contact with fabrics (particularly light colours) for a prolonged period of time.

After around 5 loads of washing, the berries will reach the end of their washing life (they will lose their structure and feel broken and brittle, like dried leaves).

They can then be added to the compost or garden to break down naturally.

Why this product is Simple and Sustainable:

Soapberries are a truly zero waste option, leaving behind only compostable material at the end of their useful lives. They are also organic, vegan and chemical free.

While unfortunately soapberries are not able to be grown in Australia (the tree is not a permitted species here), That Red House ship their products to Australia by sea to ensure a low carbon footprint.
