Did you know that plastic toothbrushes take over 400 years to decompose?

Here at The Simple Sustainable Store, we are super excited to bring to you our very own natural bamboo toothbrushes!

These children's bamboo toothbrushes:

  • have soft bristles;
  • come in a range of awesome colours;
  • have a handle made from 100% biodegradable, sustainably grown bamboo;
  • are packaged in a recyclable cardboard box; and
  • are free from plastic packaging materials.

Some FAQs about bamboo toothbrushes:

What's so good about a bamboo toothbrush?

Our bamboo toothbrushes have a handle made from 100% biodegradable, sustainably-grown bamboo. This means that once it is time to replace your toothbrush, all you need to do is remove the bristles (these are not biodegradable and will need to be thrown in the trash) and you can then bury the handle in the garden or in your compost where it will safely break down in the soil within 6 months. Simple and sustainable!

Why aren't the bristles biodegradable?

The bristles are made from Nylon-6, which is free from the toxin BPA (Bisphenol A) but which is sadly not biodegradable. The reason for this is that unfortunately there aren’t any good quality plastic-free alternatives on the market. Currently, the only natural material which has the same properties as nylon is either pig or badger hair - materials which do not meet the health and safety standards required for correct oral care.

Thankfully, the bristles can be easily removed prior to composting. Use a pair of pliers to remove the bristles from the head of the toothbrush. Doing so will remove a small metal staple that is used to clamp the bristles to the handle. Alternatively, you can snap off the head of the toothbrush and compost the rest of the handle. Please dispose of the bristles in your household waste or contact your local recycling facility to see if there’s a solution for recycling the bristles.
