If you're like us and were keen to give reusable nappies a try, but unsure where to start with cleaning them, then you've come to the right place. Here is your one stop guide on how to efficiently wash and clean reusable nappies, nappy liners and wet bags.
STEP ONE - INVEST IN A DEDICATED REUSABLE NAPPY BIN: Once you have removed the dirty nappy from your baby, we recommend in the interim storing the nappy in a dedicated nappy bin or nappy pail until you have a few in there and are ready to run a wash. Our recommendations:
- The Ubbi Diaper Pail has a high capacity, is easy to use and empty and locks in smells so that you don't need to worry about stinking out your nursery.
- The BabyRest Aster Nappy Bin is smaller but is also good for locking in any smells.
For extra sustainability points, we recommend buying a pre owned bin/pail on Facebook marketplace.
STEP TWO - REMOVE THE SOLIDS: Shake any solid poo from the reusable diaper into the toilet and flush.
STEP THREE - RINSE: Rinse any excess soiling off in the laundry tub with warm water.
Optional Step: As an optional additional step, before you put the rinsed nappies into the washing machine, you can throw the rinsed nappies into a bucket of warm water mixed with some laundry detergent and leave them to soak for a couple of hours as a form of pre-wash. We find that this helps to further reduce the amount of baby poo going through your washing machine.
STEP FOUR - RUN A WARM WASH IN WASHING MACHINE: Throw reusable nappies and liners into the washing machine on their own and run on a long, warm cycle (max 60 degrees Celsius). We would also throw any wet bags into this wash.
STEP FIVE - HANG NAPPIES OUT TO LINE DRY
It's really as easy as that! Whether you choose to go with reusables all of the time or even just for when you are at home by yourself with baby, every time you choose to reuse, you are saving a nappy from landfill. Go you!
